Hey, Hey, Hey,

Pin for Later

I currently, have that song in my head from the late Aaliyah. You know the one…where Timbaland starts off and says “ It’s been a long time, I shouldn’t have left you, without a dope beat to step to. …Step to… Step to…

Well, I am sure that you get my point. And, actually Aaliyah’s song “Try Again” is perfect for this blog post. Because there can be major obstacles in achieving goals, that makes it seem like success is not within reach. But, by identifying these hurdles to success and implementing actions to overcome them, you may be ready to take another crack at your goals.

Obstacles in Achieving Goals: Face Them Head On

Over the past two years, my goal has been to consistently blog and hopefully provide inspiration to women, who may see some commonality in their own lives. So, when I decided to re-start my blogging journey, I had to face these three obstacles in achieving my goals.

  1. Fear of Failure – You don’t get started.

  2. Lack of Hard Work – You are at a standstill.

  3. Perfectionism – You can’t seem to finish.

If you are struggling with your goals, you may want to consider if these are hurdles for you. Read below for ideas to overcome them. Plus, learn more about my goalsetting worksheet and reading plan with bible verses about goalsetting.

Fear of Failure – You Don’t Get Started.

The fear of failure oftentimes keeps us from even making our dreams a reality. You may be giddy with excitement as you begin daydreaming about your goals.  But, literally in minutes you may have internal whispers. These whispers are telling you that it’s not a good idea or you won’t succeed. It could be whispers from the enemy, as Satan tries to convince us that we are not good enough. So, fear of failure creeps in. I consider this an obstacle in achieving goals because it literally keeps you from getting started.

The best remedy to fear of failure is to just go for it. The scripture tells us that we can try the Spirit, by the Spirit (1 John 1:4). You can ask, “Will my goal bring glory to God’s Kingdom?” If your goal or dream is not truly from God, you may figure it out quickly.

We can also be debilitated from fear of failure, due to concern about how others may perceive us, if we don’t get it right. And, even fear or own disappointment at a failure can hinder us.

So, we should plan to fail. That’s right, you literally have to go into your goals believing that you are going to have some failures. You should include some of the obstacles in achieving your goals in a written plan.  The key is to also ask yourself, “What is the worst that can happen with a failure? You may have a legitimate answer the first time you ask, but I recommend continue to ask yourself about the worst consequences no more than three times. You may find that an anticipated failure and its potential consequences are not as bad as it seems.

You should also reminisce on things that you regret not doing or trying. Let this serve as fuel to get started.

Lack of Hard Work -You Are At A Standstill.

If you find yourself at a standstill with a goal, you may be dealing with this obstacle in achieving goals. Many times, our goals will challenge us. We have to be ready and willing to jump over these hurdles to success.

You have to be careful with the lack of hard work because you can easily slip into complacency. When I reflected over my first attempt to blogging, I knew that I didn’t want to lose any sleep or give up leisure time to get my blog off the ground.

When we settle and don’t put in the hard work, it is a sign that we don’t truly know our worth. And, I knew that I needed to do a better job of saying I’m worth it. So, another question to ask yourself is, “Do I believe enough in myself to invest in my goals?”

Sometimes, we also find ourselves complacent and refusing to put in the extra effort because of the fear of the unknown. You may be scared to put in the hard work it takes, because you don’t know what the end result will be.

If you feel that you just can’t get to the next level, it may be time to incorporate some help from others. You can have a coach, friend or a family member help to keep you accountable.

Course of Action: Include Accountability Partners; Check Your Complacency; Bet on You

Perfectionism – You Can’t Seem to Finish

So, I can attest to battling perfectionism as an obstacle to achieving goals. While fear of failure keeps you from starting, perfectionism can keep you from completion. At this stage of your goal, you may have completed all mini-tasks or  have something tangible in hand. But, you keep on insisting that it is not quite ready.

It will be important that you insert deadlines into your work and stick with them. You will also want to commit to a set number of hours for certain tasks.

If you can, consider delegating some tasks, this would be a great time to do so. I love graphic design, but I found myself spending a lot of hours that I didn’t have on it. So, I try to use services like Fiverr, if it is in my budget. I have even asked a friend to help manage the blog’s Facebook page and this has been a blessing to me.

Obstacles in Achieving Goals?: One Question to Ask

When it comes to your goals, you should ask yourself, “Am I in the same place or on the same level as I was a year ago? I dare you to even ask yourself where you are in comparison to six months ago. If the answer is yes, you probably have obstacles in achieving your goals.

Determine what is your current barrier and resolve to take a course of action. While goal crushing is always a work in progress for all of us, I have developed the Let’s Goal Worksheet to help you overcome the hurdles that you have. The Let’s Goal Worksheet incorporates my G.O.A.L. strategy to start you off on the right foot. Plus, I hope you will take a look at my bible reading plan that includes verses about goalsetting. It would be great on the days that you are really stuck at one of these hurdles to success. . Be sure you sign up for the Subscribers Library to receive the free downloads.
